Calendar Picks: Poetry, open mic, First Saturday on tap for weekend

Culture enthusiasts have a lot of options for this coming weekend on the local events calendar, with a Poetry Out Loud competition at Anzar High, the monthly Open Mic Night at The Annex and First Saturday at Vertigo Coffee.

The San Benito County Arts Council is presenting Poetry Out Loud from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Anzar, 2000 San Juan Highway. Anzar and San Benito High students will compete in the recitation contest.

Also presented by the Arts Council, Open Mic Night is set for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Annex, 217 Fifth St., in downtown Hollister. It includes poetry, music, drama and comedy offerings for residents wanting to express themselves in front of an audience.

Over at Vertigo in San Juan, the coffeehouse will present First Saturday featuring art by Frank Romero, a menu from local chef Lucas Morris-Lopez and beer on tap from Shanty Shack Brewing.

Additionally Saturday, Living History Days is giving it a go for its monthly showing on the Mission Plaza on Saturday, and art fans can continue to view the watercolor exhibit at the Mission from Nancy Burtch Hauk, the late Pacific Grove artist who adored the Missions and often visited them.
