Woman with gun in standoff taken for treatment, not arrested

After the three-hour standoff on Cannon Road on Monday, deputies transported the woman who had the shotgun during the situation for treatment, and no arrests were made, according to a San Benito County Sheriff’s Office captain.

Capt. Eric Taylor confirmed deputies did not recommend charges and transported her following the standoff during which investigators believed the 49-year-old woman was suicidal. Her daughter and two grandchildren had been in the home when the situation began, but police successfully removed them during the incident lasting from about 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Police and sheriff’s officers responded to a report of a distraught woman with a shotgun at her home shortly before 2 p.m. Monday on Cannon Road in Aromas.

The woman surrendered just before 5 p.m. after talking at length with negotiators with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, which helped out with mutual aid. Nobody was injured in the situation that occurred in a wooded, rural area of the county just off Highway 101.
