SBHS updates policy, will confiscate electronic devices used in class

Courtesy of San Benito High School:

With the academic year set to begin at San Benito High School on Thursday, Aug. 16, students are reminded that all electronic devices must be turned off and put away during class. Electronic devices will be confiscated if seen out during instructional time.

Principal Adrian Ramirez said the district updated its electronic devices policy this year “to provide our students, parents and staff with clarity on what we expect” regarding appropriate use of the devices. “With technology evolving as fast as it does, we also have a responsibility to keep our policies and expectations up to date with the current trends.”

The district’s Electronic Devices Policy, shown below, lays out the specific of the rule, including consequences and clarifications that the policy applies without exception.

“We acknowledge that the use of electronic devices is integral for our students to communicate and access information,” Ramirez said. “We also have to acknowledge the use of devices such as smartphone watches present the potential for irresponsible use in class.”

Electronic Devices Policy

San Benito High School is NOT responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal electronic devices brought to school (cell phones, iPods, MP3 player, video games, smartwatches, IPAD, speakers, etc.).

Rule:

  • Electronic devices deemed inappropriate will be confiscated if seen in the classroom. Students will turn off and put away all items during class.
  • Cell phones may be used before school, during break and lunch and after school. The cell phone will be TURNED OFF once the student enters the classroom. All other electronic devices will be put away.
  • Any device with camera, video, or voice recording function shall not be used in any manner which infringes on the privacy rights of any other person.

Consequences if the electronic device is out during class:

  • The teacher will confiscate the inappropriate electronic device and turn in the device to the receptionist where a parent or guardian will pick up the item (cell phone, iPod, etc…). The teacher may also write a misconduct and contact the parent.
  • If a student refuses to give the device to a teacher or staff member, the student will be escorted to Student Support. A Support Manager or Assistant Principal will issue consequences (in-house suspension, classroom suspension or off-site suspension).

This policy applies WITHOUT exception to any of the following:

  • The electronic device fell out accidentally
  • The electronic device was loaned to another person
  • The electronic device was used to check time
