San Benito High School student Kayla Salazar was the winner of the Hollister Rotary Club’s annual Richard D. King Youth Speech Contest held Feb. 3.

Open to student speakers in grades 9 through 12 that attend a high school within District 5170, this year’s Rotary speech theme was “Rotary Connects the World.”

The speech must include one of the Rotary 4-Way Test Principles and run between four and five minutes in length.

San Benito High School Principal Adrian Ramirez and Speech and Debate Advisor Chris Lasley accompanied the students to the event.

In addition to Salazar’s win, which earned her $100 and the opportunity to advance to the Area 6 competition in Morgan Hill on March 25, other SBHS speech contest awardees were Nicolas Skardoutos (second place; $75 prize); Alexis Lozano (third place; $50 prize); and Hailey Darnell and Careyla Acosta (honorable mention; $25 each).
