Police allege firearm possession, drug charges against two men

The Hollister Police Department arrested two local men for possession of a firearm and possession of drugs for sales, according to a statement from police.

On October 4, 2018, at about 12:48 A.M., Officers were dispatched to the area Loma Vista Drive and Valley View Road to investigate a suspicious vehicle with occupants possibly using narcotics. As Officer Miguel Masso pulled up to the vehicle to contact the occupants, a man, later identified as being local resident Mathew Mello (20) got out of the vehicle and began running away.
Officer Masso gave chase as Mello jumped several fences until Officer Masso caught him.  Mello physically struggled to get away and resisted arrest before he was taken into custody by Officer Masso.  Officer Masso was able to retrieve items discarded by Mello as he ran.  One of the items he discarded was a backpack which contained a handgun, ammunition, drugs and packaging material.
The second occupant of the vehicle fled on foot but was located close by.  Officers identified him as local resident Mario Bustamante (21).
Mello was arrested and booked into the San Benito County Jail on the charges of possession of controlled substance while armed, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded weapon, carrying a concealed firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of controlled substances, resisting arrest and possessing drugs for sale.
Bustamante was arrested and booked into the San Benito County Jail for  transporting controlled substances, conspiracy to commit a crime, possessing controlled substances, transport and sales of controlled substances among other charges.
