Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-20) released the following statement after accepting an invitation from the President of the United States to join the White House’s bipartisan Congressional panel on economic recovery and participating in a conference call with the President, members of his administration, and the Congressional panel:

“While I disagree with the President on a wide range of issues, my job is to fight for the people of the central coast of California. So when the President of the United States asked me to help guide our nation’s economic recovery out of the COVID-19 crisis, I accepted the invitation to ensure that our Central Coast values and voices are heard. I believe that in order for a recovery to take place, our decisions must be based on science and data from an increase in accessible and accurate testing, including the use of the Defense Production Act (DPA). We put our economy in this type of medically induced coma due to the lack of testing for this asymptomatic disease.  That is why I advised the President that we need more testing and contact tracing to get the results of who has the disease and then we can get on the road to our economic recovery. I hope to continue working with this bipartisan group of lawmakers and the White House to ensure that our nation is guided by science and sound public health policy as we persevere through this pandemic and proceed forward to prosperity.”

Congressman Panetta is one of 32 members of the U.S. House of Representatives on the bipartisan panel and on today’s the phone call with the President of the United States, during which a range of issues were discussed about the future economic recovery of our nation.

Panetta has provided an array of resources for Central Coast residents about COVID-19 here.
