Congressman Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act.

“California has felt the effects of a changing climate with rising temperatures and sea levels, extreme droughts, and life-threatening floods, landslides, and wildfires. Failure to confront and combat the climate crisis will further hurt our international community, country, and the central coast of California. This legislation is a meaningful step forward to protect our planet and our future by keeping the United States in the Paris Agreement, demanding a real climate change plan from the Administration, and laying the foundation for further innovative, effective action from Congress.”

The Climate Action Now Act prohibits federal funds from being used to withdraw the United States from the landmark Paris Climate Agreement. It also requires the administration to develop and publicize a strategy to meet greenhouse gas emission reductions. Congressman Panetta’s amendment, recognizing the critical role that American leadership played in encouraging the widespread international adoption of the Paris Agreement, was included in the legislation.
