Courtesy of the League of United Latin American Citizens:

Since 1988, San Benito LULAC has hosted the scholarship fundraising Women in Action Reception in celebration of the accomplishments of local women.

The reception is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Paine’s Restaurant in Hollister. This year, LULAC welcomes keynote speaker Lydia Camarillo to San Benito County. Ms. Camarillo serves as President of Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP). SVREP was founded in 1974 and is the largest and oldest non-partisan voter participation organization in the United States. In 1999, President Clinton and Vice President Gore appointed Lydia to serve as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the 2000 National Convention.

The Women’s Reception will be emceed by Krystal Lomanto, Superintendent of the San Benito County Office of Education.

Each year, the event pays special tribute to local women who have committed themselves to inspiring others through their unyielding civic and professional contributions. The 2019 Women of the Year reception honorees include Elaine Klauer and Shirley Trevino.

Elaine Zuniga Klauer is a Hollister native who has a long-standing commitment to improving the lives of local students. The second honoree is Shirley Trevino, community advocate for underserved and underrepresented communities. Throughout the years, these notable women have persisted to provide leadership and service to the community.

LULAC also recognizes two San Benito High School graduates as the recipients of the Young Woman Award. Samantha Barrientos is the first-ever head girls’ wrestling coach at San Benito High School. The second honoree is Reina Gonzales, graduate of the University of the Pacific, elementary school teacher, and volunteer.

The proceeds from the Women’s Reception are contributed to the LULAC scholarship program, which has provided over $165,000 to local graduating students that are continuing their path to a higher education.
