‘Leader of the Pack’ show brings doo-wop era to life

There are two more weekends for the San Benito Stage Company’s teen musical “Leader of the Pack” at the Veterans Memorial Building in Hollister.

The show has featured 29 teenagers ages 13-19. It runs through Friday-Sunday through Nov. 9. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m., while the final Sunday show this weekend is at 2 p.m.

Director Derek Barnes described the hit Broadway musical as “kind of a jukebox musical” about the late Ellie Greenwich – a doo-wop singer, songwriter and producer who rose to fame in the 1960s – who tells the story of her life from the 50s to the 80s when she wrote it. Barnes noted how Greenwich came up in a time when songwriting was male dominated, while her albums sold over 100 million copies.

“The cast is super talented and super flexible because we have some people that are playing multiple roles,” Barnes said, adding how some cast members also act as part of an ensemble group or background singers.

Among the performers, Abby Chase is playing Greenwich and Joey Rasmussen is playing her husband Jeff Barry who co-wrote many of the songs. There are 19 females in the show and 10 males, he said.

Additionally,Mia Kaanapu plays Annie Golden, another famous singer from the era.

On top of the musical, there will be pre-show entertainment as well (see below).
