HPD warns of phone scam demanding gift cards to clear arrests

Courtesy of the Hollister Police Department:

The Hollister Police Department have documented several reports of residents receiving telephone calls from people advising them they have a warrant for their arrest and they need to pay a fine.

The callers request the residents purchase gift cards, wire cash or to buy Google play cards. Once purchased, the caller request the PIN numbers from the cards in order to “Clear” the warrant.

The caller ID from the suspects has the Police Department phone number or the phone number for the social security administration. These callers are scamming residents and are not calling from the Hollister Police Department or the Social Security Administration. The Hollister Police Department would never call you and demand money.

If you receive a call of this nature or if you have sent money and would like to report the fraud, please call the non emergency phone number at 636-4331.
