Hollister schools shift toward weighing all remote learning to start 2020-21

Courtesy of Hollister School District Superintendent Diego Ochoa:

Dear Parents,

It has been and will continue to be a year of constant change for public education. As you are all aware, our Board of Trustees adopted a Hybrid School Reopening Plan at their June 23, 2020 meeting. That plan called for students to attend in-person two days per week. Much has changed since then and the number of COVID-19 cases in the city of Hollister, in San Benito County, and throughout the State of California are increasing at a troubling rate. Many local and regional school districts have decided to implement continued distance learning when the 2020-2021 school year begins.

I am writing to inform you that the Hollister School District Board of Trustees will consider a change to the Hybrid Reopening Plan at the July 28, 2020 meeting of the Board of Trustees. Our district is developing a plan to implement distance learning to start the 2020-2021 school year. This decision is made out of concern for the safety and well being of every Hollister School District employee and student. Our district is working closely with our educational partners, including the San Benito County Office of Education and the San Benito County Public Health Department in this process.

If the Board were to approve this change, our district will work hard to implement a greatly improved distance learning program for all students. Through surveys, meetings with parent representatives, and Parent Town Halls many of our parents (myself included)  and staff  have advocated for effective strategies such as a set daily schedule for every child, daily online instruction, daily office hours, small group online instruction for children that require more support, online social/emotional lessons, and online special education services (among other services and strategies).

I would like to end this message by letting all of our parents who have called and emailed us know that we hear you. We’ve received your messages and have tried to balance the concerns of all our stakeholders through this ever-changing process. We care deeply about your children. Now is the time for our school community to come together, support one another, and remain engaged in helping our children learn. Our plans moving forward will keep you safe and ensure that we accomplish our mission of educating our students.

Queridos padres,
