San Benito Stage Company’s children’s musical Madagascar Jr. opens this weekend and runs for three weeks at Sacred Heart Parish School’s gymnasium.
The musical involves 37 local youths ages 6 to 13 along with various adult crew members. The performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday for the next three weekends and 2 p.m. Sunday the next two weekends.
The musical, with a full name of Madagascar Jr.: A Musical Adventure, will largely follow the plot of the 2005 Dreamworks Animation film.
The story goes as follows, as provided by producer Adriana Ferry: At the Central Park Zoo, Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe prepare for another day of visitors while the penguins plan their escape. Join them as their welcomed to Madagascar by a herd of Lemurs and watch them ‘Move It! Move It!’ through the jungle!
Ferry told San Benito Live audiences should expect a lot of action in the performances.
“They can expect a high-energy ride into New York City watching all the animals find their way into the jungle, into Madagascar,” she said.
As for the performers, she said they seem to enjoy all the action.
“There’s a lot of dancing and singing that we think the kids enjoy doing,” she said.
Along with the regular performances, the “Community Show” on May 11 will include discounted tickets – $10 – for audience members who wear attire that supports a community group, team or activity.
