Hazel Hawkins Foundation to honor donors of the year

The Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce their Donors of the Year to be honored at the 12th Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday at San Juan Oaks.
During the evening — the emcee for the event will be Brittany Nielsen from KSBW — we will be honoring Marilyn and Richard Ferreira as our Donors of the Year for their continuous giving to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital and the Foundation.
Marilyn became involved with the Hospital in 1958 as a “Pink Lady” who visited patients and greeted people as they came to the Hospital. She was also one of the charter members of the Foundation when it was formed in 1978. She and Richard have been dedicated supporters for every Foundation campaign and fundraiser. They both stress that the most important aspect of Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital is that it is our community’s hospital, started by T.S. Hawkins 110 years ago to make sure a medical facility is available locally. And it is the responsibility for the community to support and contribute to the hospital. They lead by example – which is why the Foundation is proud to acknowledge Marilyn and Richard as our 2018 Donors of the Year.

Richard Shelton

Richard W. Shelton Insurance Marketing, Inc. will be honored as our Business Donor of the Year for their years of generous support. Angela and Rick Shelton started Shelton Insurance in 1980 while raising their family. They are both very involved in the community and were honored as the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation Philanthropists in 2013. Andrew Shelton, who was born the same year the firm started in 1980, is keeping the family business going and continues in the path of his parents with community involvement.

Rick feels that “Hazel Hawkins Hospital is a keystone in our community, and its existence is critical to the well-being of our clients and all the residents of San Benito County.” He continues, “We are committed to the support of the Hospital and Foundation in every possible way.” This commitment is the reason the Foundation is honored to recognize Richard W. Shelton Insurance Marketing, Inc. as our 2018 Business Donor of the Year.
The Foundation will also be honoring Mary McCullough as our “Heart for Hazel” recipient for her many decades of dedication to the Hospital District and the Foundation. Mary joined the Hospital Auxiliary in 1963, serving as a volunteer, Board President and Director of Volunteers. She ran for a seat on the San Benito County Health Care District Board of Directors in 1982 and has served on this Board since then.
Mary McCullough

She will be retiring this year after serving 9 terms and is very proud of the accomplishments of the Board during her tenure, which includes the building of the Skilled Nursing Facility Southside, the extension of the main hospital with the new entrance, opening the first outpatient health care facility in San Juan Bautista, the new Emergency Department and the beautiful Women’s Center. She has provided years of leadership, but states that she could not have done it without the support of her husband, Gerald. The Foundation thanks Mary for her dedicated service and is pleased to be honoring her with the very well-deserved Heart for Hazel Award.
Additional information on the foundation’s Dinner Dance:
The foundation will be celebrating 40 years in existence. The annual Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation Dinner Dance is the foundation’s primary donor recognition and fundraising event of the year. The goal is to raise over $100,000 with all proceeds going toward “Enhancing Our Outpatient Health Centers” campaign.
The foundation recently finished a three-year campaign and raised $950,000 to re-do the interior of main hospital and other facilities there, such as 24 inpatient rooms. Last year, the foundation started fundraising for outpatient facilities and will continue to do so this year.
