A field fire was reported Sunday afternoon shortly after 3 p.m. off John Smith Road in San Benito County, but was contained shortly after 5 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol reported both a traffic collision and a fire, causing John Smith Road to be shut down. The fire had reached 38 acres as of 4:47 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The fire was contained as of 5:01 p.m.
There was a notation from the CHP about a hit and run collision, power lines being knocked down, and a shed on fire.
The CHP online reporting system noted a fire in a field near John Smith Road, which had reached 38 acres as of 4:47 p.m. Fairview Road had been closed for some time but has reopened, while John Smith Road remained closed shortly before 5 p.m.
