Elections office: Visiting DMV is opportunity to register

Courtesy of the San Benito County Elections Office:
Recently passed California state laws have made registering to vote easier than ever. Every visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles is an opportunity to change or update your voter registration.
The Motor Voter Law automates voter registrations for those who qualify to vote. Those eligible to register to vote that wish not to, must opt out to stay off the voter list. Unfortunately, the Motor Voter law with many voters has resulted in some unintended consequences, leading to voter confusion. Some Vote-By-Mail voters might receive two ballots because the information that they recently provided to the DMV was different than how they were previously registered. There are many scenarios that might trigger another ballot to be mailed to the voter such as an address spelling error, the use of nicknames or abbreviations not in a previous voter registration. The Secretary of State is aware of these issues and is working to remedy these problems with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
In the meantime, the San Benito County Elections Department understands that the quality of the voter experience is heavily influenced by the accuracy of voter registrations. This is why the accuracy of your voter registration is our highest priority. The election staff has worked tirelessly to intercept and reconcile these errors. We want to ensure that the VBM voter is getting only one ballot that is based on the information on their voter registration application. We may not catch all the errors but rest assured that in all cases only the first ballot received by this office will be counted.
