Election: Thompson heads toward third term as sheriff

Updated Wednesday

Darren Thompson will retain his seat as sheriff of San Benito County.

Thompson, sheriff since 2010, is headed toward defeating deputy Bill Hutchison for the four-year term as head of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

With unofficial released reported, Thompson had gained 70.73 percent of the vote with 4,441 votes.

As of Wednesday morning, the elections office still has up to 6,000 ballots left to count, though, with 6,710 tabulated so far.

Thompson, age 53, was a member of the Watsonville Police Department for 23 years. Hutchison, age 44, has been with the sheriff’s office and Hollister Police Department.
