Election: Casillas winning big in treasurer’s race

Updated Wednesday morning

Melinda Casillas beat Jaime De La Cruz in a landslide in the race for county treasurer/tax collector/public administrator.

With unofficial results reported from Tuesday’s primary, Casillas had 71.37 percent of the vote with 4,293 votes. De La Cruz had 228.63 percent with 1,722 votes.

As of Wednesday morning, the elections office still has up to 6,000 ballots left to count, though, with 6,710 tabulated so far.

De La Cruz is a four-term county supervisor and a controller for a local company. Casillas is the longtime budget officer for San Benito County. In about six months, she will succeed Mary Lou Andrade, who did not seek reelection.
