Councilwoman recalls meeting late Sen. McCain

Hollister City Council members Tuesday adjourned their meeting in memory of the late Sen. John McCain.

Councilwoman Mickie Luna made the motion to adjourn in McCain’s memory and she recalled a positive encounter with the late Arizona congressman — and former prisoner of war — at an event in Arizona honoring Daniel Hernandez, who came to the aid of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords when she was injured in a 2011 shooting.

McCain, who passed away Aug. 25, is remembered as a war hero who was a POW for five years in Vietnam and later served in Congress before losing the 2008 election to former President Obama.

Luna said she met McCain backstage at the Arizona event and they talked at length, particularly about the California border.

“Later on when we walked off stage, he asked me, ‘Where are you sitting? Because I’ve got a seat next to me at my table.'”

Luna said she couldn’t end up sitting next to him because her husband Vince was there as well and there was just one seat available. She did take her husband over to meet him, though.

“As veterans, they really connected,” Luna said.
