CHP releases details on highway wreck killing Hollister woman

The California Highway Patrol released information on a traffic collision that resulted in the death of a 20-year-old Hollister resident on Saturday morning.

The victim in the fatality was Anyssa Lopez, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to the CHP, at about  8 a.m., Lopez was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer southbound on Highway 101 just south of Buena Vista Avenue with three passengers in the vehicle.

The CHP reported that the Hollister woman had been driving at an unsafe rate of speed behind a 67-year-old man from San Jose in a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, who had been going about 65 mph, the speed limit.

The Hollister driver hit the brakes and veered but was unable to avoid a collision. The Ford Explorer continued down an embankment and rolled over, ejecting the driver. The unidentified woman was proclaimed dead at 8:20 a.m.

The three passengers in the Explorer, ages 19, 20 and 20, sustained minor injuries and were transported to San Jose Regional Medical Center. The San Jose man was uninjured.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a cause.
