Caltrans will hold its 27th annual Worker Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, May 3 at 10 a.m. on the front lawn of the Caltrans District 5 Office at 50 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo.

“This event allows us to remember those who have lost their lives serving the people of California and to show the commitment to our current employees that worker safety along the state highway system is our most important mission.  We ask the public to use safe practices behind the wheel to keep themselves and our highway workers safe,” said Acting Caltrans District 5 Director Richard Rosales.

Santa Barbara County Director of the Office of Emergency Management, Rob Lewin will be the keynote speaker at this year’s event.

Since 1921, 188 Caltrans employees have been killed on the job, including eight in District 5.  One of the biggest hazards for workers is motorists who do not exercise caution while driving through highway work zones.  Caltrans reminds everyone to ‘Be Work Zone Alert!
