Baler varsity football beat longtime rival Gilroy High School on Friday in a reboot of the Prune Bowl, 39-0 at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas, which is serving as San Benito’s home field this year as the new stadium is under construction in Hollister. The winning team retains the Prune Bowl VFW trophy for the next year. The game was first played in the 1920s and the trophy was first awarded in 1956.
The victory took the Balers to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league, while Gilroy dropped to 1-5 on the season.
