Calendar Picks: Chicken Festival, ‘Boston’ tribute, Gloria Velásquez

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, don’t look further than San Benito County. Here are Calendar Picks for the weekend from San Benito Live:

Gloria Velásquez performance

Credo Studio in San Juan Bautista will host renowned artist Gloria Velásquez on Sept. 15 amidst a slate of upcoming events at the local culture hub. Velásquez’s performance is set for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 15 with singer Lupita Ortiz as the opening act, said Ramona Hill, the founding director of Credo Studio. The facility located at 1 Polk St. in the Mission City will play host to the so-called “Superwoman Chicana” whose works including music, poetry and storytelling.

Ridgemark entertainment

There will be a DJ on Friday night and a band called “Bootleg” playing on Saturday night at Ridgemark Golf Club, 3800 Airline Highway. The entertainment runs from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Knitting at the Library

The event is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the San Juan Bautista Luck Library, 801 Second St.. The library noted how it usually meets on the Second Saturday of the month but there was a scheduling conflict so it’s the third Saturday. There will also be a short “International Dot Day” event prior to the knitting group meeting. All skill levels welcome.

LULAC Health Fair

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of San Benito County Council 2890, will host the 4th Annual Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Hollister Community Center located at 300 West Street in Hollister. This event will gather families for a day focused on community wellness. LULAC will provide a variety of health screenings, healthy eating options and fun physical activities to celebrate overall healthy lifestyles. The LULAC Health Fair will have a variety of interactive health provider booths, music, dance and prizes. Some which consist of free services such as eye exams, dental examinations, blood sugar testing, blood pressure testing, as well as a special session at 1 p.m. where residents may provide comments on the current and future health care needs of the community. The Health Fair is sponsored by both LULAC in partnership with many community partners who together provide comprehensive health information. Among the many businesses and organizations represented are: San Benito Medical Associates, Hazel Hawkins Hospital, San Benito County Public Health, Jovenes de Antano Senior Services, San Benito Health Foundation, Hollister Recreation Department, plus many more. Tribute to Boston

The final show in this summer’s Hollister Concerts series is set for Saturday at Guerra Cellars. The show Saturday is the “Don’t Look Back Tribute to Boston.” It is set for 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with an opening by “4NR Tribute to Foreigner.” For ticket information, go here.

Chicken Festival

The San Juan Bautista Chicken Festival is clucking once again. After about a decade without the Chicken Festival, the event returns Sunday to the streets of San Juan. It will include local merchant booths, a chicken BBQ cook-off, music and family fun. The event runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
