San Benito High School AVID teacher Christine Wahl-Dukes and Migrant Program Specialist Liliana Ruiz on Nov. 9 took 27 SBHS students to The Raices – Creo En Ti Summit at Santa Clara University.

The one-day “College and Career Development and Empowerment” conference was designed to engage numerous Latino/a professionals, associations and employee resource groups to spend a day with high school and college students, sharing career insights and collaborating on empowerment activities ranging from panel discussions, mock interviews, speed mentoring and an awards ceremony.

Hundreds of students from all over Northern California, along with many parents, experienced a keynote address, workshops, and breakout sessions focused around college, including sessions on college life, health professions, STEM opportunities, Western Undergraduate Exchange schools, and interactions with faculty.

There was also a lunch with mentors who are Latino/a professionals in all fields who sat with the students and shared their experiences.

“We had a fantastic, informative day and hope to bring more students (and their parents!) to this event next year,” Wahl-Dukes said.
