SBHS soccer player signs with Fresno State

San Benito High School girls soccer player Shantay Tamez this week committed to playing on scholarship for Fresno State.

Teammates and coaches supported the senior captain at her signing Wednesday at the high school.

“It’s a huge deal,” said her coach Becky Bonner-Leland. “She works hard on and off the field. She’s great in the classroom. She’s a player you could literally put in any position and she’ll succeed. The only one I haven’t seen is goalie. And I’ll be honest: If I put her in goalie, she’d probably be good at that, too. She’s just naturally athletic.”

The coach believes Tamez will make an immediate impact for the Division 1 program.

“She’s going to be a huge asset for them next year,” Bonner-Leland said.

Tamez has moved around quite a bit in her career, with her coach calling her the “glue that’s holding everybody together.” This year, she’s played center defensive midfielder and has played defense on her club team.
