San Juan to sizzle with culture over weekend

The Mission City will have another busy weekend coming up with the Great San Juan Bautista Rib Cookoff and Indian Market set for Saturday and Sunday.

The rib cookoff, which brings in thousands of visitors from throughout the region, will take place along a closed Third Street. It will include the rib cooking, live entertainment, arts and crafts. Admission is free for the event run by Williams Ltd., while it will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

At the same down down the block, the Indian Market is set for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days at the San Juan School soccer lot.

According to organizer Laynee Reyna, it will include Native American & Western arts/crafts, dance, foods. Xipe Totec Aztec Dancers Celebrating Cinco de Mayo Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The Amah Ka Tura Ohlone Deer Dance is set for 11 a.m. Saturday.

A ceremony honoring veterans will feature San Juan City Manager Michelle LaForge, Iraq War Navy Helicopter Pilot, and 99-year-old Leonard Del Byler, a World War II/Korean War Navy Hellcat Night Fighter Pilot is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.

Admission includes a $1 donation. Kids under 12 are free. It is sponsored by Jardines Mexican Restaurant de San Juan, KCBATV35, KIONTV 46, KSBW TV8, Marta & Robert Fernandez, Gilroy Children’s Therapy Center and Recology.
