Safeway shoppers fill more than 500 bags for FoodBank

A Safeway initiative has helped the Community FoodBank in a big way with more than 500 bags of food donated.

According to the FoodBank website, the Bag Summer Hunger Program at Safeway in Hollister ran through June 27. The program was in place to help feed kids while schools are out for summer. Each bag of food will contain pasta and sauce, soup, green beans, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, granola oats bars, peanut butter, oatmeal and canned chicken. Each $10 donation at the checkout stand provided nine pounds of food to Community Food Bank of San Benito Count, according to the organization.

The results showed that San Benito County shoppers filled 539 grocery bags, the FoodBank announced.
