Deputies pursued a stolen truck this evening in Aromas, Prunedale and into San Benito County.
Deputies were alerted to a stolen Dodge truck in north Monterey County which they found driving a short time later. Deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver, Jesus Ontiveros, decided he was not going to stop. Multiple deputies responded and continued to pursue Ontiveros in Prunedale and into San Benito County, including Aromas and San Juan Bautista. Ontiveros was continuing to drive in a reckless manner at high speeds.
Deputies attempted to use a PIT (Pursuit Immobilization Technique) maneuver to stop the truck, which temporarily stopped the truck in an agricultural field. Ontiveros placed the truck in reverse and backed across the field, through a fence onto the roadway at Carlton Road and Hwy 152 just outside the City of Watsonville. Deputies were then able to stop the truck by pinning a patrol vehicle against the driver’s door. Ontiveros then decided to run away on foot escaping out the passenger door into a field. K9 Bond was deployed and took Ontiveros into custody.
We later determined Ontiveros was monitoring Watsonville Police Department radio traffic with a small radio. Ontiveros was booked into the Monterey County Jail for vehicle theft, felony evading, assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest. He will also be held responsible for the thousands of dollars of damage he caused by driving across an organic agricultural field and through multiple fences.
