Congressman Jimmy Panetta released a statement Tuesday about the U.S. Department of Agriculture plan for a $12 billion package of emergency aid to farmers caught in Trump Administration’s escalating trade war.
According to the statement:
Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced its plan for a $12 billion package of emergency aid to farmers caught in Trump Administration’s escalating trade war.
“As President Trump threatens billions of dollars in more trade tariffs, the U.S. agriculture industry is caught in the crosshair. Today’s action by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is an admission that domestic farmers and ranchers are being harmed by these broad, unilateral trade enforcement actions,” said Congressman Panetta. “As the representative of the Salad Bowl of the World, from state that leads the nation in agricultural exports, I urge the Administration to work to expand U.S. agricultural exports abroad, not continue to close international markets and damage industries at home.”
Earlier this month, Congressman Panetta co-introduced bipartisan legislation that would require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to adjust imports in the interest of national security under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.  Under the bill, Members of Congress would have a 60-day period following submission to review the president’s proposal. Any legislation to approve the proposal will qualify for expedited consideration in both chambers.  The requirement would apply to all future Section 232 actions, in addition to those taken in the last two years.
