Congressman Jimmy Panetta released a statement on the passing of Bishop Richard Garcia from the Diocese of Monterey.
Garcia died Wednesday due to complications from Alzeimer’s Disease and led the local diocese for the past 11 years. According to the National Catholic Reporter, Garcia was diagnosed with Alzeimer’s in April and his health declines rapidly.
Panetta released the following statement on his passing:
“My family and our neighbors on the central coast of California mourn the passing of Bishop Garcia. He was not just a man of God, but also a man of the people. He served all nationalities and stations in life, including those with special needs, the poor, the incarcerated, and migrant workers and refugees who recently came to the United States. Bishop Garcia’s deeds, teachings, and his compassion were a blessing to this world. He will be dearly missed.”
