Dear Community Member,
The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, ruling that the Trump Administration may not immediately end DACA without a reasoned explanation. The decision preserves protections for hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who contribute so much to the central coast of California and our country.
Dreamers are individuals who work in our communities, succeed in our schools, and proudly serve in our military. They are our friends, colleagues, and neighbors. They are taxpayers. They are our first responders and essential employees. More than 200,000 DACA recipients are supporting our nation’s COVID-19 pandemic response as health care professionals, doctors, nurses, and other frontline workers.
Although the Supreme Court decision helped us win a battle today, we must continue to fight for Dreamers for tomorrow.
As an original cosponsor of the Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6, I worked with many of my colleagues in Congress to pass that bill out of the House of Representatives in order to provide DACA recipients with an opportunity to earn their citizenship. Now, more than ever, we must continue to demand that the Senate take up and pass that critical piece of legislation. Such a law would ensure DACA recipients and Dreamers throughout our nation can continue to live in and contribute to the place that all of us call home.
