Obituary: Hubert Shoji Teshima (1932-2018)

Hubert Shoji Teshima, was born on January 4, 1932 in Watsonville, California to Akira Teshima and Chiyoko Shoda Teshima.  Hubert grew up in San Juan valley and attended Olympia Elementary School, San Benito Joint Union High School and the Presidio of Monterey, Army Language School, in Monterey California.  After high school he joined the US Army and was stationed in Japan as a military interpreter.  It was during this time where he met his spouse, Mutsuko (Jackie) Kawashima.  They were married on May 14, 1956.  Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the San Juan valley due to the illness of his father and worked on the family farm as well as numerous manufacturing engineering firms where he performed the responsibilities of a boilermaker.  Hubert was a quiet man, but excelled at execution of tasks and was known for his engineering creativity.

Hubert was an active member of the Japanese American Citizens League.  His interests included that of being a consummate handyman, loved riding motorcycles and enjoyed watching scrambles, flat track and hill climbs primarily in the Hollister and Gilroy areas.   He was an active fitness enthusiast and would routinely ride his bicycle in excess of 20 miles per trip often with others who were half his age.  He loved the camaraderie and competition.  Ocean swimming was also a favorite activity with Rio Del Mar and numerous locations in Hawaii topping his list of favorite swimming places.

Hubert is survived by Jackie his spouse of over 62 years of San Juan Bautista, his children Peter Teshima, Mark Teshima and Linda Ricketts and their spouses Lisa Strohman-Teshima, Kristine Teshima and Steve Ricketts.  Grandchildren include, Troy Teshima, Marques Teshima, Evan Teshima, Kyle Teshima, Trey Teshima, Aaron Ricketts, Scott Ricketts and Jason Ricketts as well as great grandchildren Rush and Peyton Teshima.  Surviving siblings include Amy Boch, Naomi Benitez and Harris Teshima, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Hubert was preceded in passing by his parents, Akira and Chiyoko Teshima, and siblings, Marcie Suezaki and Kenneth Teshima.

The family would especially like to thank the caregivers from the Mabie Northside Skilled Nursing Facility.   Their excellent professionalism and dedication was greatly appreciated.

Hubert lived a full life with many adventures, experiences, friends and family.  He will be missed but never forgotten.

A memorial service will be held at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home on August 18, 2018 at 10:00 am followed by a reception.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to Mabie Northside Skilled Nursing Facility.
