Doris was born in San Juan Bautista in the same house where her Mother was born in 1900. A third generation Californian, she was proud of her heritage and the fact that her great grandparents were San Franciscans in the 1850’s. Her great grandfather discovered gold and bought 163 acres in Santa Clara Valley where Dorie’s grandmother was born in 1861 the year of the Civil War.
After graduating from San Jose State she worked at Camp Mather Yosemite and met Hal Fox, marrying three months later. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Hal died in 2017. She and Hal were teen counselors in 1970 and took their two teen sons, Mitch and Perry to Europe for six weeks during two successive summers as part of a student campus. The Fox Den at Tahoe was an important part of their lives, their sons and their friends and eventually their grandchildren in winter and summers.
Doris worked at KQED in ITV and on Hugh Downs’ show “Over Easy.” In 1986, she became a producer at KCSM TV, for “The Computer Chronicles,” the first TV show on computers. She received two TV awards during this time, one for her show on the disabled from the Easter Seal Society and one from the Computer Press for Best Television Show of 1990. When the internet put the show out of business, she worked as an extra for a Robin Williams movie and for the TV show Nash Bridges. After Hal retired they became travelers to Palm Springs, Hawaii every year, Mexico, Scandinavia, Russia, Greece, Istanbul, the Far East, Tahiti and over 25 cruises throughout the world, including passages through the Panama Canal, both east and west.
Dorie belonged to Filoli, The Museum Society of San Francisco, The Newcomer’s Club of San Mateo, the Historical Society of SJB and the Historical Society of North Lake Tahoe and is survived by her sons, Mitch (wife Kitty) and Perry (wife Cat) and her 4 grandchildren. Her burial will be in the historic San Juan Bautista cemetery handled by Black Cooper Mortuary in Hollister. She will be buried, along with Hal’s ashes, next to her parents Al and Louise Perry.
Friends and family can pay their respects on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 after 9:00 AM at the funeral home with her son, Mitch, speaking at 9:45 AM at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home and then proceeding to San Juan District Cemetery for interment at 10:30 AM.
