Although nitrate levels have dropped below the maximum allowable level, the City of San Juan Bautista put out another notice late last week underscoring concerns about the contaminants.
Nitrate levels have been a problem in San Juan Bautista for four years now. Due to high levels, the city has been required to notify residents of the dangers, particularly to young children or pregnant women. San Juan Bautista officials are working to install new wells in order to take the high-nitrate well No. 2 off line.
San Juan Bautista has been on an on-again, off-again order from the state to notify residents of the poor water quality. Most recently, levels in mid-2017 reached the point again where the city had to do these public notifications. City water officials periodically test the water to see if those levels have dropped below the maximum allowable nitrate level of 10 milligrams per liter.
In January, nitrate levels ranged from 6.47 to 8.09 milligrams per liter. The city issued another nitrate notice on its website as a “precaution” because there’s no guarantee levels won’t exceed the maximum, according to the city website.
