‘Madagascar’ musical auditions to start Thursday

If your child has an acting or singing bug, San Benito Stage Company will hold auditions this coming weekend for this year’s children’s musical Madagascar.

The auditions are scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at the Grace Bible Church Education Building, 634 Monterey St., in Hollister. The show itself will be in May.

“We were just looking for a show that would appeal to our youth, and it’s a great show,” said producer Adriana Ferry.

She will be joined by Denise McNett as co-producer, and Ferry said the stage company is excited to have Ken Powell as a new director for the nonprofit community theater organization.

“He has great ideas and I’m excited because it’s just a lot of awesome characters coming to life on stage,” Ferry said.

The show is for children from age 6 to eighth grade. According to an announcement for the auditions, those who try out should be available for call backs Saturday.

In describing the show, Ferry said it’s like Madagascar the movie with Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra and Gloria the Hippo with plenty of costumes to go around.

“Except now it’s being presented in a musical,” she said.

The show’s performance dates are May 3-18 at Sacred Heart Parish School.

“We’re really excited to present this show and we’re looking forward to having all our young talent come and audition for us,” she said.
