Local teens encouraged to pre-register for voting

Local 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote and become part of the 100,000 teens statewide to do so.
Secretary of State Alex Padilla on Friday announced 100,000 pre-registrations from 16- and 17-year-olds since the program launched in September 2016.
According to Padilla’s office: The new HighSchool.sos.ca.gov website provides information and resources for students who want to be civically active. High school students can learn more about pre-registration, find out how to be a student poll worker, get resources to host a Student Mock Election on their campus, and learn how to organize voter registration drives on their campuses during High School Voter Education Weeks.
According to a reminder from San Benito High School, students are encouraged to take part in two “High School Voter Education Weeks” starting April 16.
Below is the reminder from SBHS:

Under state law, 16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote; future voters will need a valid California driver’s license, OR valid CA Identification Card, AND the last four digits of their Social Security card. Potential voters can register online or mail in a registration form by May 21. The state primary is scheduled for June 5. SBHS teacher Mitch Huerta has forms in his room (392) available to all students. Traditionally, the U.S. Government and Economics courses provide opportunities for all seniors to register to vote electronically or on paper.
The state has declared April 16-27 as “High School Voter Education Weeks,” and has asked high schools to participate in voter registration.
