Updated: Coroner IDs Hollister fatality victim, 18

An 18-year-old male from Hollister died Sunday night in a solo-vehicle traffic collision on Airline Highway.

The San Benito County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jose Fernandez Jr.

The incident was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. A California Highway Patrol press release indicates a 17-year-old girl was in the car at the time and sustained major injuries.

The CHP reported the vehicle rolled over for unknown reasons south of Portuguese Way near Tres Pinos Elementary School. Fernandez Jr. allowed the 2016 Infinity Q50 to drive off the road onto an embankment where it rolled over several times, according to the CHP.

The driver and passenger were fully ejected from the vehicle. Fernandez Jr. was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the passenger sustained major injuries.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor. Residents with information should call Officer Hernandez at the Hollister-Gilroy CHP at (408) 848-2324.
