Police arrested a local man after citizen reported a reckless driver, according to a statement released Monday.
On Wednesday at 5:09 p.m., several concerned community members reported a reckless white Dodge sedan was in the area of Union Road at Cienega Road. The caller told the 911 dispatcher the vehicle was swerving, running red lights, and was heading toward Airline Highway. Later, dispatchers received another call from additional community member stating the reckless vehicle was in the area of San Benito High School.
At about 5:32 pm, Sergeant Ray Celano located the vehicle in question near the intersection of San Benito Street at Park Street. Sgt. Celano attempted to make a traffic stop. However, the driver of the white Dodge sedan failed to yield and fled the area. Sgt. Celano chased the vehicle and the pursuit continued for several blocks until the suspect vehicle finally stopped. The driver was detained by Sgt. Celano without further incident.
The driver, Cody Giovanni Leyva (age 22 from Hollister), was eventually arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance (heroin) and evading police in a vehicle. Leyva was transported to the San Benito County Jail and booked for the listed charges.
The Hollister Police Department would like to thank the community members for being vigilant and proactive in reporting the reckless vehicle. The police department is grateful a dangerous driver was taken off the streets with no one injured. Residents calling in and advising of dangerous situations is imperative to create a safe community.
