County unemployment rate climbs to 5.2 percent

San Benito County’s unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in December, a full percentage point higher than two months prior.

The jobless rate came out with state numbers that showed a California unemployment rate of 4.2 percent in December. That was a slight increase from 4.1 percent in November.

In San Benito County, it rose from 4.4 percent in November to 5.2 percent in December. That came after a slight increase from 4.2 percent in October, according to numbers provided by the California Employment Development Department.

The numbers are estimates compiled through surveys with employable adults. The latest figures reflect a continually strong job market in San Benito County, statewide and throughout the U.S.

San Benito County’s numbers can fluctuate due to the relatively small size of the employee pool and seasonal work in the agriculture industry.
