Coroner releases ID of pedestrian killed on Highway 25

The San Benito County Coroner’s Office released the identity of a male pedestrian struck and killed by a van while crossing Highway 25 a week ago.

The victim in the incident was Jonathan Melendez, a 24-year-old from the Hollister area, confirmed Capt. Eric Taylor with the San Benito County Coroner’s Office on Friday.

At 10:08 p.m. Aug. 31, a Hollister woman northbound in a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country on Highway 25 south of Wright Road struck Melendez, who had crossed from the east shoulder into northbound traffic and into the path of the vehicle.

Emergency personnel attempted to render aid but were unable to revive the pedestrian on the scene, according to the CHP. The vehicle’s driver did not sustain any injuries.

The CHP noted the driver was traveling at about 55 mph. Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to be a cause.
