San Juan Bautista’s new mayor is Cesar Flores.
Council members voted in Flores as the new next year’s mayor on a 3-2 vote. It was all three of the new council members — Leslie Jordan, Mary Edge and Flores — affirming the new mayor. Council members John Freeman and Dan DeVries dissented on the vote.
Flores takes on the role for the next year. In that position, the San Juan mayor oversees meetings and acts as a figurehead on the city’s behalf.
The vice mayor one year will oftentimes become the mayor in the subsequent year, but there is no requirement for that to occur.
Jordan nominated Flores as mayor before the vote with Edge and Flores in support.
Flores on Wednesday said he doesn’t have a personal agenda and wants to do what’s best for the town. He said he will work closely with the city manager and staff.
“People chose me,” Flores said referencing the most recent election in which he garnered the most votes on the council. “I got 388 votes. The people have spoken. That’s what they wanted. That’s what they got.”
