Carjacking suspect stalled over manual transmission

Hollister police need the public’s help in identifying a carjacking suspect whose caper stalled over confusion with a manual transmission.

According to a police statement:

On Nov. 19 at about 1 p.m., an unknown suspect approached a man on the 900 block of Apricot Lane and brandished a firearm. He demanded to take the man’s vehicle.

The victim ran to a nearby house to ask for help.  The suspect, however, struggled with the car and was unsuccessful in taking the vehicle. Apparently, the suspect did not know how to operate a manual transmission. The suspect was last seen on foot toward Westside Boulevard.

Police searched the area but the suspect was not located. The suspect was recorded on a nearby surveillance camera that resulted in a distant picture of the suspect. The suspect was wearing a Nike hooded sweatshirt at the time of the crime.

The man is described as a Hispanic male adult approximately 25 to 28 years old, approximately 5’ 5” tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing a dark grey sweatshirt and dark colored jeans with white dirty shoes.
