Caltrans District 5 has completed its 29th annual Worker Memorial Ceremony from the front lawn of the District Office at 50 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo.  The ceremony was held in a virtual format to ensure physical social distancing.  It can be viewed on You Tube at: https://youtu.be/WowMEvbqCvo

“Despite this challenging time, we felt strongly about continuing our annual tradition of remembering our colleagues who lost their lives while working to maintain and improve the state transportation system.  I think this video serves as a wonderful tribute to our fallen workers,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

California Highway Patrol Commander L.D. Maples and Caltrans District 5 Deputy Director Sara von Schwind also participated in this online video ceremony.

Since 1921, 189 Caltrans employees have been killed on the job, including eight in District 5.  There were no statewide fatalities in 2019.  One of the biggest hazards for workers is motorists who do not exercise caution while driving through highway work zones.  Caltrans reminds everyone to ‘Be Work Zone Alert!
