Looking to get out and do something in San Benito County in the next few days? Check out a few options in this weekend’s Calendar Picks, or watch related videos below.
Civil War Days
The National Civil War Association will take visitors back in time for two days of living history Sept. 8-9 as they re-create the sights, sounds and smells of the Civil War in the San Benito County Historical Park. The San Benito County Historical Park is one mile south of Tres Pinos on Highway 25. The re-enactment event will feature battle reenactments with soldiers, cannon fire and townsfolk. Â Visitors can walk through actual encampments of Union and Confederate soldiers, seeing how soldiers lived, prepared food, and passed the time till the next battle. California bandit Tiburcio Vasquez and his gang will ride again as they did in that era, and Civil War-era vendors will feature the goods of the day that were indispensable to traveling armies. On Saturday, Mansmith’s BBQ will be on site for hungry visitors, and the Dunneville Dance Hall will feature craft vendors. Sunday will feature Groupo Folklorio on the Main Stage. Bring the family on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the following day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Parking is $10 per car, with proceeds going to help preserve the Historical Village.
Coffee with Gavilan superintendent
Gavilan College Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Rose will be hosting several informal “Coffee and Conversations” gatherings in the local communities served by Gavilan. She will visit Mars Hill Coffee House at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 and Vertigo Coffee Roasters at 9 a.m. Oct. 13. According to those coffee meeting announcements: “Join this informal gathering with Gavilan College Superintendent / President Dr. Kathleen Rose and staff to talk about what’s happening at Gavilan College.”
Cooking with Fish demo
The San Benito County Arts Council is excited to present “Cooking with Fish!” — a new culinary art series with local chef extraordinaire, Mike Fisher, of Fisher’s Restaurant. Each month’s workshop features a different culinary theme, where participants will have the opportunity to see Mike prepare various dishes, to share and take notes on his prized recipes and to sample small plates. The 45-minute cooking demonstration will be followed by a Q&A with the chef, as well as mingling with fellow food enthusiasts.
