San Benito County did not add any newly confirmed COVID-19 cases Wednesday, with the total remaining at 53.
The county’s total now includes just one active case. Of the 53 cases, there have been 50 patients recovered and two deaths, according to the most recent county data.
The number of confirmed cases, on paper, could potentially rise in the coming weeks because San Benito County has been designated as a priority testing site through a federally sponsored program. The county hopes to administer between 5,000 and 8,000 tests in the next two months at the Veterans Memorial Building, while more details are expected soon – including how to register – as the program rolls out.
The county’s hospitalization rate has been relatively low, with the Emergency Department director noting Tuesday how there had been just five COVID-19 patients treated at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital and just one person placed on a ventilator to help with breathing. The rate of infections – before the mass testing – has dropped significantly over the past few weeks as well.

To date, a total of 1,077 patients in San Benito County (SBC) have been tested for COVID-19 at twenty-one reporting laboratories. Of these, 997 have tested negative for COVID-19. Fifty-nine percent (633) of patients tested were female. Patients ages ranged from 10 months to 101 years (median: 45 years). SBC Public Health Services continues to work with medical providers to identify and test individuals who meet criteria for COVID-19 testing. As of May 6, 2020, there have been a total of 53 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in SBC; 1 case remains active. Confirmed cases include patients who have since recovered and those who are deceased. Fifty patients have recovered and are no longer considered active cases in SBC. A total of 2 deaths have been reported in SBC, one during weeks 12 and 14, respectively.
