Hollister schools closed until April 13

The Hollister School District announced school will be closed until at least April 13.

Hollister School District Superintendent Diego Ochoa told San Benito Live the closure will extend into spring break, which was scheduled for the week of April 6.

“It will allow us to have multiple weeks of certainty for the community,” Ochoa said. “That was very important.”

Ochoa noted that student learning packets will go out Wednesday. Families can pick up their student packets at the food service locations of schools on Wednesdays and Thursdays each week through the closure, Ochoa said.

The packets will be between 50 and 70 pages of actual student work. It is meant to help students retain what they have learned so far this school year, he said. That will include such subjects as math, science, reading, writing, art, history or P.E. activities, he said.

Students will not be graded on the materials.

“Our goal is to have kids work on different skills they have been taught this year so they retain what we taught them,” he said.

He said the district is also setting up a series of learning videos that will start going out Monday.

“We’re busy now creating those videos and those messages,” he said.

Families will receive links to those videos through the district email system, along with Facebook and local media outlets.
