Hollister district lauds teacher recruitment effort

The Hollister School District is pleased to report that the teacher recruitment process for the 2020-2021 school year is off to a great start! The district recently engaged in a thorough review of hiring practices to improve our strategies to recruit and retain high-caliber individuals to work with our students. As a result, the district honed in on the following strategies: (1) Post job vacancies early in the hiring process (2) Attend regional job fairs with large teams prepared to interview candidates, and (3) Sell new teachers on the many advantages of working and living in San Benito County.

Our first chance to implement these changes took place in February when the Hollister School District Human Resources team attended the recruitment fair at CSU Monterey Bay.

The team was led by Assistant Superintendent Erika Sanchez who said: “Our goal is to hire the very best candidates that CSU Monterey Bay has to offer. Last year, we hired four new bilingual school psychologists at this event.”

This local recruitment fair was critical to the district’s hiring plan because so many of the attendees live in San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties. The recruitment team was able to interview the potential new staff members then and there! Many thanks to the site principals, district office administrators, and Superintendent who attended the event on behalf of the Hollister School District.

The Human Resources team then attended the CSU Fresno recruitment fair. Once again, the district sent a large group of site and district leaders. The team was also accompanied by a very special guest, service dog Perla, who works with our students at Sunnyslope Elementary School. Suffice it to say that the Hollister School District booth was busy all day!

The HSD recruitment team is preparing to attend Sonoma State University’s teacher recruitment fair, along with CSU Sacramento. The goal is to keep the momentum going and be fully staffed before summer begins. While Assistant Superintendent Erika Sanchez is responsible for the management of these recruitment activities, she praises her department staff.

“Linda Villalon, our HR Manager, deserves all the credit in the world for setting up these events. Our IT department has also been amazing,” she said.
