On Dec. 10, Maze Middle School hosted a breakfast to honor the reclassification of 29 students.
When a student is reclassified it means that they’ve mastered English proficiency and can be successful in core classes without the support of English Language Development (ELD). To qualify, a student must meet rigorous district and state criteria. Reclassification is one of the most important academic milestones for English-learner students.
The Maze library was filled with students, staff and families who all gathered to recognize this great achievement. Board of Trustees President Stephen Kain, Trustees Jan Grist and Trustee Carla Torres-Deluna were in attendance and spoke to the students about their bright futures ahead.
Torres-De Luna became emotional as she thanked the parents for supporting their students’ educational goals. One parent shared that she wanted to thank all of her son’s teachers for their hard work. Reclassification is truly a joint effort between families, students, teachers, support staff, and administration.
This year, Hollister School District has adjusted the reclassification criteria in response to changes at the state level. Under the focused leadership of Superintendent Diego Ochoa, the reclassification process has been clarified for students, families, and staff.
Maze principal Diana Herbst agrees: “There’s a better understanding of what reclassification means for students especially when they get to high school. This was a real celebration.”
Carolina Calero, Director of Educational Services, and Patrisia Martinez, EL and Migrant Coordinator, will continue to work with Principals and Assistant Principals to ensure hat more candidates get identified and receive the support they need to be reclassified.
