Agency studies ways to make Highway 25 transit trips more efficient

Courtesy of the Council of San Benito County Governments:

COG is conducting a transit study for SR 25 between Hollister and Gilroy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to make transit trips along the corridor more efficient.

The goal of the study is to determine how transit vehicles can bypass peak period congestion to provide faster service that will draw increased ridership, in turn reducing the number of single occupant vehicles in the corridor and helping to reduce traffic congestion.

The project study area includes both the Highway 25 corridor and the parallel Union Pacific rail line.

Transit options under consideration include shoulder bus lanes, a bus route alongside the rail line, and passenger rail service. The study is evaluating each of these options, how the service would impact or connect with operators and stakeholders in both Hollister and Gilroy and otherwise along the corridor, and to determine which option will provide the most mobility benefit at the lowest cost.  COG will hold a public workshop on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial Building in Hollister.
