San Benito High School and several local feeder schools have received bleeding control kits that contain the basic essentials to administer first aid to an individual with a wound that is hemorrhaging.
Many consider these wounds to be caused by a gunshot or knife wound, but those injuries can also occur from a shop accident, construction accident or car crash.
“Being that we have so many of the career pathway trades being taught on our campus, I felt it is important to have these kits distributed around our campus,” said Hollister Police Officer and SBHS School Resource Officer Staci Esqueda. “Quick bleeding control can exponentially increase the likelihood of survival.”
Kris Mangano of the San Benito County Office of Emergency Services authored a grant for the bleeding control kits, eight of which have been brought to campus. The kits typically cost between $60 and $70 each.
Esqueda has taken training provided by Bleeding Control.org and the American Surgeons of America and has applied to become an instructor so she can provide other schools the needed training on how to administer first aid using the equipment in these kits.
