State Sen. Anna Caballero, who represents San Benito County and the Gilroy area, released the following statement Tuesday regarding the mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday evening resulting in the death of three bystanders and the shooter:

“I was saddened to hear about the senseless shooting over the weekend at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, an event attended and loved by the community. As an Assemblymember, I regularly attended the festival with family and friends. I am heartbroken at how young the victims were, and my sincere condolences go out to the families and community during this difficult time. We must get serious about addressing gun violence in this country, if we want to avoid another tragedy like this. Thank you to the Gilroy Police Department, all the first responders, and festival volunteers for their quick response, which prevented further casualties. I look forward to helping in any way that I can, and hope for healing for Gilroy and all those in attendance. My heart is with the families of the victims.”
